laptop donation program |
Wilderness in partnership with the Peava Community E-Learning Committee has established the Laptop Donation Program to provide friends of Wilderness the opportunity to assist students and school leavers of Peava Village to obtain essential hands-on computer skills and undertake a range of distance learning courses via nearby Bekabeka Distance Learning Centre [DLC]. Under our rural wireless internet project partnership, cutting-edge NGO-developed remote wireless technology will link Peava School with the DLC providing students and teachers here at the village school with full online learning opportunities. This is a first for such a remote and education resource-challenged environment, and we hope will set a fully sustainable model which can be applied in similar situations across the Pacific. |
Remi and Waelinah of the Peava Community E-Learning Committee |
To allow Peava students, teachers, and school leavers to take full advantage of the donated laptops, Wilderness is supporting ongoing basic IT skills training at Bekabeka DLC, 15 minutes boat trip from Peava. There has been fantastic interest and participation and we hope that through your participation in this program we can keep up with these young peoples' educational aspirations. The donation program is specifically devoted to laptop computers and peripherals in view of their portability, ruggedness, and low power consumption - all key issues in our remote setting. If you have a laptop in good working condition running Windows 2000 or higher that you no longer use, or if your business or organisation turns over laptops on a regular basis, those machines can enable young Peava people to make the technology leap [a transition that is being managed amazingly well once the materials are available] necessary to survive in a flat world, without having to jettison the unique village life and cultural identity that make Marovo lifestyle an inspiration. We welcome offers of donation, technical skills - teaching Peava people service skills to keep a range of brands and operating systems running in the village environment - and other assistance that will help underwrite a sustainable future for Marovo.
